In 1980 Bobby Nathan began recording 8 track records for New Wave bands Polyrock and Bill Laswell’s Material who were appearing at NYC’s Hurrah’s and demos records for Disco acts Gloria Gaynor and Crown Heights Affair.
By Summer of 1980 Unique had expanded to 16 tracks and In September 1980 Ian McDonald co-producer and co-founder of Foreigner left the band and moved into Unique. McDonald enlightened Bobby Nathan and Micheal Finlayson with his recording knowledge. McDonald was the catalyst for Unique to expand to 24 tracks in November 1980.
In 1981 Unique’s massive collection of keyboards, drum machines and sequencers attracted technology minded producers to Unique Recording Studios. The LinnDrum, Oberheim DMX, Roland 808 and EMU Systems Emulator in particular brought Bobby “Bobby O” Orlando (O Records) to record and mix The Pet Shop Boys and John Waters underground movie star Devine.
In 1982 Unique expanded to a 36 input MCI 636 console. Producer Keith Diamond brought Billy Ocean to record “Caribbean Queen”, “Mystery Lady” and “Suddenly”. At the end of 1982 Arthur Baker, John Robie and Tom Silverman were working at Intergalactic Studios but had to leave when the studio closed down due to noise complaints. The trio bright Afrika Bambaataa and Soul Sonic Force to Unique to remix “Planet Rock”. The trio quickly made their home at Unique, birthing Streetwise and Tommy Boy Records, the first independent Hip Hop 12” labels.
By early 1983 Unique had added a second 24 track studio and then a third. Club DJ’s John “Jellybean” Benitez (The Funhouse), Mark Kamins (Danceteria) and Shep Pettibone (Kiss FM, Salsoul Records) also began remixing radio hits for the NYC club scene. A young Chris Lord Alge started engineering at Unique and quickly became a favorite mix engineer. The 12” single became a staple and soon major record labels jumped on the 12” remix money maker bandwagon.
